Conservation of the Gharial in India
2007 saw the upgrading from endangered to critically endangered status of perhaps the world’s most endangered crocodilian, the Gharial in India. Habitat restriction and destruction, twined with poaching has left this species on the brink of extinction. There are currently 9 protected areas and a captive breeding program under way. This project was started by the gharial conservation alliance of which we’re currently a member, the partnership of the IRCF and local government.
